General Dental Care
At Cricklewood dental Practice, we believe in providing expert, high quality and affordable dental care for your long term benefit. In other words, our aim is to help you achieve and maintain a happy, healthy smile and keep your teeth for life
What is a dental hygienist?
Dental hygienists are specially trained to work as part of the dental team, to give care to patients.
They play an important part in dental health care and are mainly concerned with preventive dental health and treating gum disease - showing you correct home care and helping to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
What can I do to help the hygienist?
The hygienist's main work is to prevent and treat gum disease. This includes professionally cleaning your teeth by removing plaque and tartar (usually called a ‘scale and polish' or a prophylaxis). However, perhaps their most important role is showing you the best way to keep your teeth free of plaque. Plaque is a sticky coating that forms constantly on your teeth. Hygienists also give advice about diet and about preventing tooth decay. The hygienist will work with your dental team to give you care that is tailored to your needs.
Can a dental hygienist do anything else?
Dental hygienists also take dental x-rays. The dentist will use these to help diagnose problems and decide on the possible treatment. Dental hygienists can also place fissure sealants, apply fluoride varnishes and administer fluoride treatments. Other procedures may be carried out by dental hygienists depending on the laws that apply where they work.
Tooth whitening is also often carried out by the dental hygienist, under a prescription from your dentist.
Why is this dental treatment important?
Regular professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar, combined with looking after your teeth and gums properly at home, will help keep your mouth healthy. A clean and healthy mouth will improve your appearance, help you to keep your teeth and give you fresh breath.
Is the treatment expensive?
£50.00 per session

What are the side effects?
The most common side effect is tooth and gum sensitivity. Your dentist is best resources to ensure that you are a good candidate for teeth whitening and that you are using the right concentration of whitening formula. Philips Zoom whitening product have two mild desensitising agents, potassium nitrate and Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (ACP), to minimise tooth sensitivity.

Whitening treatment help to reduce existing stains, but through consumption of coffee, soft drinks or just through natural aging. Your teeth may eventually become discoloured again. Inman Aligner
What is an Inman Aligner?
The Inman Aligner is a simple removable appliance used to align front teeth quickly and safely. It's ideal as a stand alone treatment or to prealign teeth prior to further cosmetic options such as bonding or minimal veneers.
How does it work?
The Inman Aligner has Nickel Titanium coil springs that power two aligner bows that gently oppose each other, guiding the teeth into their new position. These gentle forces are active over a very large range of movement, which is why the Inman Aligner works so quickly.
The image below shows the squeeze effect of the two aligner bows on the front teeth. The inner bow pushes forwards, while the outer bow pulls back on the front teeth.
How long is the treatment with the Inman Aligner?
Most cases are completed within 6-18 weeks. Your Inman Aligner dentist will give you a realistic guide of what to expect. For suitable cases, the Inman Aligner is usually much faster than alternative orthodontic techniques.
What's involved in Treatment with the Inman Aligner?
· Replace a large filling when there isn't enough tooth remaining
· Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
· Restore a fractured tooth
· Attach a bridge
· Cover a dental implant
· Cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
· Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment
Why has my dentist suggested a crown or bridge?
Crowns are indicated for teeth, which are too extensively decayed, damaged or discoloured for treatment by other means.
A bridge is recommended for optimum dental health. It can restore and help maintain your natural bite, it prevents unnatural stress on adjacent teeth and it helps discourage further dental decay and periodontal problems.
Dentures
People wear dentures to replace lost or missing teeth so they can enjoy a healthy diet and smile with confidence. Dentures are made of either;
1. Acrylic (plastic) or
2. Metal.
A ‘complete' or ‘full' denture is one which replaces all the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaw.
A ‘partial' denture fills in the spaces left by lost or missing teeth. It may be fastened to your natural teeth with metal clasps or ‘precision attachments'.
Why should I wear dentures?
Full dentures, to replace all your own teeth, fit snugly over your gums. They will help you to eat comfortably and speak clearly, and will improve your confidence and self-esteem.
Partial dentures replace teeth that are missing and can sometimes be supported by the teeth you have left. If you have gaps between your teeth, then your other teeth may move to take up some of the space, so you could end up with crooked or tilted teeth. This could affect the way you bite and could damage your other teeth.
Dental Implants provide a long lasting and aesthetic solution for the problem of missing or broken down teeth.
There are well over 100 different implant systems currently in use around the world. Only a handful of these implant systems have any substantial evidence in the dental research literature to back their use, and even fewer implant systems have any substantial long-term follow up evidence to support their use on patients.
At Cricklewood Dental practice, we have selected the most modern, top of the range dental Implants from Straumann, Nobel Biocare and Camlog. These implant systems are all world class dental implant companies which have been established for many years.
There are many alternative cheaper type of implants available in the market but as we do not have the much needed scientific and clinical support to back their performance, at Cricklewood Dental Practice we do not think is justifiable to provide them to our patients no matter what the financial benefits can be to both to the patients and the dentists.
Also by using dental implants from one of the major implant companies, we ensure that in years to come if the patient’s implant needs a new screw or an abutment, the company is likely to be still in business to supply the parts needed for maintenance.
Inlays
Dental inlays are used to repair decaying teeth that do not require extensive bridgework, or to replace older metal fillings. Most dental inlays are composed of porcelain, though some can be made from gold or composite resin. Patients that desire a naturaloften request porcelain inlays in lieu of metal fillings, since they are highly undetectable.
The placement of dental inlays is a relatively easy dental procedure, though the completion of inlays tends to require two dental visits.
The first visit generally consists of obtaining a tooth impression, which is achieved by placing a temporary inlay upon the area. This impression is then sent to a dental lab where a precise mold of the tooth area is created. The second dental visit will complete the inlay task by replacing the temporary inlay with the permanent one.
Most patients that undergo inlay work do not experience a high level of pain, and most experience only minor discomfort. In fact, it is recommended that inlay patients return to regular activities directly following this type of dental work. This is one of the main reasons why inlays are popular with patients and dentists alike.
There are many benefits that come with the installation of dental inlays. One of the most important benefits is the fact that customized, bonded inlays do not leave room for bacteria to enter the tooth area. While metal fillings can contract and expand according to food temperature, dental inlays are not subject to either hot or cold food conditions. In addition, dental inlays allow a dentist to preserve a larger amount of a patient's natural tooth. When metal fillings are used, a larger portion of the tooth must be eliminated.
In addition, inlays last up to thirty years, which is significantly longer than any other type of filling. Due to their longevity and durability, the placement of inlays often prevents the need for further dental work at a later time. Another important aspect of inlays is the fact that they can strengthen teeth up to seventy percent, which often prevents future tooth breakage or loss.
White Filling
White fillings have always been considered less long lasting than silver amalgam fillings, however with the advanced materials we use at Cricklewood Dental Practice, a white filling can often last as long as a silver filling. Their life expectancy can depend on where they are in your mouth and how heavily your teeth come together when you bite. Your dentist can advise on the life expectancy of your fillings
Why should I consider white fillings?
Most people have fillings of one sort or another in their mouths. Nowadays fillings can be natural looking, as well as doing the job they're meant to do. Many people don't want silver fillings that show when they laugh or smile because they are more conscious about the way they look.
Are white fillings expensive?
Because many white fillings are classed as a ‘cosmetic' treatment, you can only have them done privately. So costs can vary. Costs usually depend on the size and type of white filling used, and the time it takes to carry out the treatment.
Is it worth replacing my amalgam fillings with white ones?
It is usually best to change fillings only when your dentist decides that an old filling needs replacing. When this happens you can ask to have it replaced with a tooth-coloured filling. Some dentists prefer not to put white fillings in back teeth as they are not always successful. One way around this would be to use crowns or inlays, but this can mean removing more of the tooth and can be more expensive
